Bill passed in Westminster
The Sunbed Bill passed in Westminster today will do no more than ban under 18s from using sunbeds in commercial tanning salons. It will not prohibit under 18s from purchasing or hiring sunbeds for home use and does not outlaw unstaffed tanning salons where under 18s can use them. These latter two issues are subject to further regulation which may never happen. Inevitably, under 18s who use tanning salons will home hire or walk into an unstaffed salon where the abuse of sunbeds is more likely to occur. The Bill will come into force in 12 months - around April 2011.

The Association supports a ban on under 18s but lobbied for this Bill to be deferred so that a more constructive and effective Bill could be promoted. The Association expressed concern that this Bill was rushed through within time constraints and would do little to prevent sunbed use by under 18s.

Furthermore, the Association pushed for a further safety measure to be included in the Bill - a maximum UV output level adopted by the EU several years ago but yet to be fully implemented in the UK. This would have made sunbed use safer for all users and the Association was disturbed that this was ignored.

TSA has been concerned to see information published on the 0.3 issue which is misleading and incorrect especially relating to the date 1 April 2009. TSA has close contact with government and has kept its membership updated on the progress of implementing 0.3 in the UK. TSA will keep its membership updated and provide assistance on how to explain changes to customers. Non-members will receive this information on joining TSA. The following is a statement of fact.
